Local Government Essentials Series

2019 Topics, April – May 2019

These programs cover some of the essential elements of local governance in Wisconsin. Programs are moderated by UW-Extension’s Local Government staff.

The programs will be offered via webinar. You will be able to see and hear the presenters. Reference materials are sent to you in PDF format. One benefit of joining the program “live” is interacting with your colleagues statewide. You will get to hear their questions and the answers, and they will benefit from hearing yours.

The Alcohol Beverage Regulation and Licensing program is being presented in two parts this year.  Part 1 will cover more of the basics.  Part 2 covers offers the opportunity to submit questions ahead of the program and is for officials who seek more information on current laws and issues.

Alcohol Beverage Regulation and Licensing Part 1: Monday, April 29, 2019, 10 am – 12:00 noon (Webinar)
Under state law, Wisconsin municipalities issue and renew alcohol licenses.  New municipal clerks and others looking for a refresher on the basics of alcohol licensing will benefit most from this session.  Covered in the program; different types of licenses, license qualifications, notice requirements and other statutory requirements as your municipality prepares for the upcoming license renewal period.

Property Tax: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Thursday, May 2, 2019, 10:30 am — 12:00 noon (Webinar)
The property tax is the most important own-source revenue for local government. In this program you will learn about the strengths and limitations of the property tax based on national research and the challenges specific to Wisconsin local governments from a city administrator with work experience in four (4) states.

Alcohol Beverage Regulation and Licensing Part 2: Monday, May 6, 2019, 10:00 am — 12:00 noon (Webinar)
Part 2 of of this topic is intended for new and continuing officials who want to stay up-to-date with recent law changes, current issues, and Wisconsin Department of Revenue resources related to alcohol licensing. Tom Ourada will cover recent legal updates and legislative changes. To submit your questions ahead of time, please email them by Wednesday, May 1, 2019 to lgc@extension.wisc.edu.
